"Instagrammable" Italy: Hyperreal Photography on Social Media

"Instagrammable" Italy: Hyperreal photography on social media This diploma thesis is dedicated to the phenomenon of authenticity and truthfulness of retouched digital travel photography on the social network Instagram. Social network users create a series of simulations and cause a shift of the meanings in the image by using predefined filters, masks, and other post-production techniques that transform the interpretation of reality to the point where they ultimately create hyperreality. According to Barthes, the literal meaning of the message is always accompanied by a connotation, while the two components of the message cannot be separated. In many cases, the connotations are inserted into the visual content by the creators themselves in order to achieve their purpose. In the analytical part of this work I focus on selected "instagrammable" travel photographs, which gradually lose contact with first-order reality due to interventions in the image and a shift of meanings and contexts. The aim of this work is to show how hyperreality is built in specific travel photographs that bloggers share on Instagram and what is actually required of travel photographs shared on a social network. Revivals of Forms and Styles in Visual Art: Current Hyperrealism as Product of Postproduction or a Commentary on the Advent of New Media

The book Postproduction: Culture as Screenplay, written by French aesthetician Nicolas Bourriaud is going to be initial text for my diploma thesis. Bourriaud claims, that contemporary art is mostly made by the principle of assemblage; art works are made by reinterpretation, reproducing or by new exhibiting of artefacts or forms of past. The assumption of the original concept in artworks of contemporary artists - semionauts (travelers in the worlds of signs) has been allready completely ineffective. Through the example of hyperrealistic paintings, which has lately reappeared in portfolios of international and czech artists, I will try to show whether its revilal is based on the emergence of new medias, that even more than in the seventies simulate reality or whether they deal with the concept of postpostprodution - the artists lend only formal, in this case, hyperrealistic, signs. This diploma thesis will be completed by the case study of paintings of czech hyperrealist painter Jan Mikulka.
Gender and Media in the Age of Post-Modernity: Revealing Gender Stereotypes in the Contemporary Czech Advertising Discourse

ENGLISH SUMMARY The main objective of this thesis was to provide a complex perspective on the mutual relationship of gender and media in the age of post-modernity with a special attention to the stereotypical gender portrayal presented to us by the contemporary Czech advertising discourse. We chose to demonstrate this problematics through the methods of semiotic analysis on the analytical sample of 5 advertisements (consisting of selected TV commercials) representing various aspects of stereotypical gender images appearing in the today's Czech advertising contents. We then subjected these selected advertisements to the analytical methods in pursuit of finding the answers to the questions related to the media image of men, women and our society that the stereotypical gender depictions contained in these advertisements help to construct. Although many of these advertisements appear to be openly sexist or even misogynic on the first sight, using the mechanisms of semiotic analysis we came to a rather opposite conclusion proposing the analyzed contents are rather pro-feminine tending toward an extensive masculine critique. Myth in American Advertising after 1945

This thesis is designed as a comprehensive analysis of the advertising discourse within some pre-set constrains. Specifically, the main area of interest is the realm of American print advertising after 1945. Within these limits, advertising is understood as a mode of language, the chief semantic unit of which is a form of Barthesian myth, a superstructure divorced from reality that supersedes de Saussure's semiotics of the sign. The bulk of this thesis is then a diachronic analysis of the development of these myths and their role as both mirrors and catalysts of a whole range of stereotypes, value hierarchies or fixed ideas firmly embedded within American collective consciousness. The primary materials for this analysis are then various specimen of the advertisements themselves, carefully selected because of their representativeness, influence or significance within the advertising realm. The main theoretical framework rests on Marx's understanding of the commodity as a certain type of fetish, Barthes's description of the structure and social function of the myth, Baudrillard's and Debord's theories on such notions as the society of spectacle, the reign of simulacra and hyperreality, Benjamin's understanding of the uniqueness of representation and its aura and finally McLuhan's detailed accounts of...
Visual Perception in the Work of René Magritte

This work provides a detailed analysis of three works by René Magritte based on the theoretical background of Visual Culture Studies and Semiotics. Since these disciplines still need to be better established in Czech research, the first part of the thesis is devoted to creating of theoretical background relevant to the interpretation of Magritte's works. In addition to this part aiming at the issue of human perception of images in general, the thesis also deals with the interpretation of selected works and the dynamics of the relation between word and image that had influenced Magritte's work. Based on the interpretation of Magritte's work, I try to illuminate the ways in which we perceive images and evaluate the world through them.
Rhetoric of the image in contemporary media

This Bachelor thesis addresses primarily modern myths and rhetoric of the image as they are represented in the theory of Roland Barthes. Barthes' reflections are supported by the thoughts of Jean Baudrillard whose approach to modern media is very similar but differs in the usage of the terms simulacrum and hyperreality. A slightly different view of modern media is provided by Marshall McLuhan and his theory of "hot" and "cool" media. In this thesis, the theories are applied to specific visual messages.

Michel Maffesoli and Zygmunt Bauman add the traits of Benjamin's flâneur to the (neo-)nomad, namely his "flâneur" gaze and his relation to commodities. But in the concept of nomad these traits gain specific nature - on the field of fashion they transform nomad into migrant, who is capable of creative work with vanitas. Nomad as a travelling flâneur is a stranger-guest and becomes a tourist, willingly getting lost in the city and voluntarily being surprised by unexpected encounters. Tourists relation to his memories could be described with Benjamin's description of mémoire involontaire as a revived punctum. A tourist prepares his memories like a nicely descending ruins. Souvenir is his materialised memory. It's not only a duplicated plastic Eiffel tower, but a magic artifact. It's a collective aura, what's on Benjamin's mind when he writes about aura regression. The private aura comes instead, turning things to talismans, reenchanting the world. The era of postmechanical reproduction reminds one, that there is a way to reproduce not just mechanically but biologically: a bricolage remix is made. Souvenirs descend and take shape of hommogenic rummage which reveals the fundamental form of postmodern metamorphosis: recyclation. This metamorphosis can finally be used when analyzing the settler turn into nomad...
Virtuality and Construction of New Visuality

This dissertation focuses on the problematic of the use of specific virtual representational methods and their influence on the construction of the new visuality. The aim of this dissertation is to show how computer simulations and visualizations used in medical imaging change the way of our apprehension of the world. Nowadays, within academic circles we witness both optimistic and sceptic theories concerning the effects of integration of computer technology and human apprehension. In this work we would like to answer the question about the type of knowledge we gain through virtual visualizations and we would like to prove that virtual simulations don't necessarily have to be a threat but, on the contrary, by developing visual imagination they can support new, creative apprehension of reality.
